The Immune System

How does diet effect the immune system?

Eating a healthy diet will help your immune system. This is possible when you consume the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals. If you are concerned with your immune system and want to make sure it functions properly, eat foods that are high in antioxidants and contain vitamin A and C. These foods would include blueberries, oranges, peaches, peppers, papayas, and many other fruits and vegetables. If your diet includes alcohol this will also effect the immune system. When you drink alcohol too frequently, it will lower the host defense against bacterial infections. For example, in the lungs, the intake of alcohol lowers the barrier integrity, antioxidant capacity, and the production and release response to an infection.

The Science of Sex Appeal

When it comes to sex appeal towards another person, many people think it's only based on the other person's looks. But there is a science to why we find another person as attractive and is even sexually appealed towards them. A lot of the reasons are based on genetics and how our ancestors chose the best mate to survive and grow. For example, the symmetry in a person's face is a factor. If there is an odd deformity in someone's face because it is asymmetrical, there is less of an attraction due to a worry of a lack in physical and genetic health. Another example of attraction to another person is their voice. When a study was performed where male volunteers listened and rated the attractiveness of 10 female voices, those 10 different voices only came from 4 different females. There were different ratings from the males of 2 voices coming from the same female. This is because a female's voice changes in pitch during ovulation when they are most fertile. But it's not all just genetics that influences whether or not a person is attracted to someone else. If the person is mentally aware that they are being watched and judged based off of attractiveness, that person will then alter how they present themselves to make them seem they are more attractive. For example, when a study was performed where a group of males and females were told to walk on a treadmill while being filmed, half of them received an explanation that they were going to be analyzed on their walking motion for its efficiency using a computer algorithm. With the other half, they received an explanation that their video recording of their walking will be shown to other people to evaluated the test subject's sexual attractiveness. With the test group that was explained they were tested for walking efficiency, the women had very subtle and normal hip movements and the men had their shoulders and chest relaxed. On the other hand, the test group that was explained they were being evaluated on their sexual attractiveness, the women swayed their hips more and the men puffed out their chest, had swaggering shoulders, and their arms were slightly farther away from their body. This shows that when we are conscious about being evaluated on our attractiveness, we tend to exaggerate our movements.

Global Warming 101

Earth's climate has always fluctuated over time, but in the last century the planet's temperature has risen unusually fast. It is most likely due to human activity from driving, factory production, and power plants that is causing what scientists call global warming. The burning of fossil fuels from oil and coal is releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and causing more than usual amounts of heat to be trapped near the earth, which is known as the greenhouse effect. Proof of global warming is shown in a link of warm years with 1998 being the warmest year in measured history and 2005 following that. It is also shown in tests taken from ice cores that carbon dioxide and methane have hit their highest levels in the past 420,000 years. Additionally, Arctic sea ice is shrinking at a rate of 10% in the last 30 years. As long as people use energy and increase fossil fuels, the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere will continue to rise. This will lead to either minor changes like an increase in temperature or more dramatic changes like rising sea levels that could flood coastal areas, severe droughts, animals unable to adapt to changes and becoming extinct, and more intense hurricanes. Overall, people need to be conscious and make smarter decisions that are helpful, rather than harmful to the planet.

Population Growth

For the world to reach a population of 1 billion it took hundreds of thousands of years, but it only took 123 more years to reach 2 billion. As time has progressed, the world's population is currently increasing by 1 billion people every 13 years. Today's population is estimated at 7 billion, but by 2025 it is estimated to reach 8 billion. Even more shocking, by 2050 there will be 2.5 billion more people than there are today. Since there is an increase in population, there is an increase in demand for water, but the earth only contains so much water. In addition, population has been growing faster than the food supplies. If there is an increase in production of food to meet this demand there will need to be a compromise of an ecological disruption. Along with the population increase, there will be an even worse climate change than what is currently occurring due to a higher demand of oil, gas, and coal. The solutions to all of these problems include a reduction in consumption, sustainable solutions to meet the increasing demands of food, water, and fuel, provide universal access to family planning resources, contraceptives, and information, and empower women by giving them access to health care, education, and birth control.

The Girl Who Silenced the World for 5 Minutes

Seven Suzuki represented a group of 12 and 13 year olds known as ECO, the Environmental Child's Organization, by speaking about how the future for the next generation does not have the best odds. This is due to the people of her parent's generation not taking care of the environment. From the starving children around the world, the animals that are dying from their homes being taken away, and the fear of breathing the air because of the uncertainty of what chemicals are in it. The adults treat these problems like they have all the time in the world to fix the problem, but since they don't know how to fix it and they don't have a lot of time, then they need to stop breaking it. Everyone is in this together and needs to help fix the problem. The problem is that everyone who is wealthy and is blessed to have the finer things in life are too afraid to share and let go of some of their wealth with those less fortunate. Even a child Seven's age from the streets of Brazil said she wished that she was wealthy so she can share the wealth with the other people. She goes on to explain that adults teach children not to fight with others, to work things out, to respect others, to clean up their mess, not to hurt other creatures, and to share and not be greedy. Yet based upon society and the environment, those same adults that teach those children those morals don't follow those morals anymore.

Saving Valentina

A man named Michael Fishbach spends 2 months in the Sea of Cortez every winter photographing blue fin back and humpback whales. He helps track the whales while observing their behaviors in the wild. In 2011 on Valentine's Day, Michael and his family came across a young humpback whale that seemed to be deceased, but was actually still alive. Michael put on some snorkeling gear and jumped in the water to see what was wrong with the whale. Upon examining the whale, he found out that the whale had been severely entangled in a net that had been used by local fisherman. The net went all the way up the whale's back, both pectoral fins were pinned to its side, and the tail was so entangled in net that the whale was weighted down about 15 feet below the surface. They tried radioing for help, but it would take too long for someone to arrive and help before the whale would die. Since they didn't want the whale to die, they started to try and cut the net to free the whale. They first were able to free one of the pectoral fins and then half an hour later were able to free the other pectoral fin. After an hour, they made the final cut in the net that was wrapped around the tail which released the whale completely. After being freed, the whale breached, did tail lobs, tail slaps, and pectoral fin slaps for an hour. They all believed it was not only a show of pure joy, but of also great thanks.

Why I'm a Weekday Vegetarian

Speaker Graham Hill, realized that even though he considered himself "green," was raised by hippie parents in a log cabin, started a website called Tree Huger, knew that eating a hamburger a day could increase his risk of dying by a third, knew that 10 billion animals that are raised each year for meat are raised in factory farm conditions that people wouldn't even consider for cats, dogs, and other pets, knows that meat causes more emissions than all of transportation combined, and knows that beef production uses 100 times the water than most vegetables do. He realized that what he was faced with was that he is either completely a vegetarian or completely a meat eater. So instead of having to choose between those 2 options, he came up with a third option that he has been doing for a year called "Weekday Veg." Basically he eats like a vegetarian Monday through Friday and eats whatever he wants on Saturday and Sunday. He explains by doing this, he is cutting 5 days of meat out of the week which is 70% of meat intake, he's leaving behind a smaller footprint, he's lessening his pollution, he feels better about the animals, he's saving money, he's healthier, he knows he's going to live longer, and he lost some weight.

Garbage Island

Journalist Thomas Morton travels for a week to reach an area in the Pacific Ocean where there is trash that is polluting the ocean that is estimated to be double the size of the state of Texas. The region is not only trashed by big and identifiable pieces of waste such as tires, helmets, coke bottles, and hockey sticks, but it is also completely littered with broken up bits of plastic that makes it seem like you are swimming inside of a snow globe when you are in the ocean. The reason why there are bits of plastic is because plastic is not biodegradable, but rather photodegradable which means the plastic is broken down by sunlight into tiny pieces. Since all of these contaminants are in the ocean where it is small enough for some sea lifeforms to consume, those sea creatures get consumed by fish that then get consumed by other fish, and are then consumed by humans.

Greenpeace: Stopping Amazon Deforestation

Forests house 2/3 of the world's land based species of plants and animals, but are quickly being taken away from them. By logging and burning forests, the large amounts of carbon that is stored is released into the atmosphere which is contributing to 20% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions that is causing climate change. That is more than what cars, planes, and trains are emitting put together. Brazil is now considered the world's 4th largest climate polluter due to deforestation. A large amount that is being deforested is to produce chicken feed. Greenpeace started to work with locals and Brazilian organizations to stop the destruction and find out who is responsible. Businesses such as McDonald's were part of purchasing the chicken feed that was being produced due to deforestation. When Greenpeace put the uncomfortable spotlight of those corporations, it brought change. Brands like McDonald's and Walmart agree it's customers and promote that they want to contribute to solutions and not deforestation. 

Canary is Dead

A team of biologists studied the coral reefs of the Phoenix Islands in 2000 and 2002, where the coral reefs became known as the most pristine on the planet. But in 2004, another team went to visit the coral reefs where they found the reef to be completely dead. The researchers tried to think of reasons for why this would happen. Coral reefs are susceptible to viscous diseases which erode away living tissue, but there were no traces of an epidemic. Excessive logging or intense agriculture can throw sediment onto a reef choking corals to death, but there are no trees or farms. The crown of thorns is a deadly sea star that in large numbers can wipe out vast areas of coral, but there was only one crown of thorns that was observed during the dive. Over harvesting of top predators like sharks and turtles can wreak havoc with the ecological balance of a reef system, but the predator population was found to be almost completely intact. Destructive fishing methods such as dynamite, cyanide, and natural growing plants can be used to stun fish and destroy coral in the process, but those methods are not in use at the Phoenix Islands. Pollution from industry oil and sewage feed fast growing algae that can easily dominate the reef, but there is no source for pollution anywhere near the reefs. Instead, an intense overheating of the central Pacific Ocean began as scientists were leaving the area of the coral reefs in 2002. The coral can usually recover if the conditions return to normal under 3 months, but this overheating lasted for 7 months, which in the end killed the coral reef.

Reflection on "Bully" the Movie

Summary

The movie "Bully" is a documentary of five families who have kids that are being bullied at school. Two of the kids who were bullied took their own lives because they couldn't handle the bullying anymore. The bullying of the kids was something as simple as calling someone stupid, and escalating up to the bullies choking, punching, and stabbing the kids, which was all caught on tape that is shown in this movie. Reaction

I had already seen this movie once when it first came out in theaters. The first time I saw it I cried like a baby because it is so sad and depressing that an 11 year old child would choose to end his life because kids at school are bullying him on a daily basis. Even how another child was being punched, choked, and stabbed with the cameras rolling and capturing everything, but he wouldn't say anything to anyone because he knows that the bullying isn't going to stop. It's especially sad when his mom asks him how does it make him feel about being punched and the boy replies that maybe he doesn't feel anymore. The second time watching it I still cried, but I felt more enraged by what is happening. Schools are making these promises that they are going to do everything they can and that they are going to fix it, when in reality they are no where close. It sickens me that so many families have to bury their children because they decided to commit suicide, especially at such young ages. I remember when I was in first grade I got bullied by one boy who was known for being a bully because I used to suck my thumb. It affected me, so that was when I stopped sucking my thumb, but I was still feeling horrible about myself. Other kids were being bullied by him but weren't doing or saying anything about it because they didn't want this kid to come after any of us. But I was so hurt that I said something to my teacher and thankfully something was done about it. There were any problems with anyone after that. Yet now when kids go to authorities, it's like they don't even listen or try to understand and take enough action, if any.

Plan

Obviously bullying needs to be stopped. Children need to be able to feel safe about going to school. They should be going to school to learn, not live in fear of walking down the hallways. I feel like there should be a club at school for anti-bullying. Students can get together and think of ways to prevent bullying on their school campus. If there is someone who is being bullied they can come to this club as a no judgement zone so they can talk about what is going on. It's better to talk things through with others rather than holding it in. One person can only take so much. They can then take further action to the principle to deal with the specific bully. The bully's family should be involved with the situation too. Just like the kids who are being bullied and not telling their family, the bully is obviously not telling their family that they go to school everyday and pick on their peers. If there is any influence at all to stop the bully, it will most likely be someone from the family.

Chapter 2

  1. Studies indicate that certain characteristics if the Type A pattern--anger, cynicism, and hostility--increase the risk of heart disease.
  2. The heightened response to minor stressors in the Type C personality may impair immune functions.
  3. According to the American Psychological Association, 77% of adult Americans reported stress-related health problems in 2007.
  4. The stress triggered by a pleasant stressor is eustress.

Chapter 3

  1. Nearly 50% of college students report depression severe enough to hinder their daily functioning.
  2. In electroconvulsive therapy for depression, an epileptic-like seizure is induced by an electrical impulse transmitted through electrodes placed on the head.
  3. Seasonal affective disorder is when depression worsens during winter months as the number of hours of daylight diminishes, then improves with the spring and summer.
  4. 1 in every 100 people has a schizophrenic episode sometime in his or her lifetime, most commonly starting in adolescence.

Chapter 7

  1. The suicide rate of compulsive gamblers is 20 times higher than that of the general population.
  2. Some experts link compulsive shopping with neglect or abuse during childhood; it also seems to be associated with eating disorders, depression, and bipolar disorder.
  3. Internet addicts spend an average of 38 hours online every week.
  4. Adolescent girls who date boys two or more years older than themselves are more likely to use drugs.

Chapter 8

  1. On average, a male smoker loses  about 13 years from his life; a female smoker loses nearly 15 years.
  2. Hormonal fluctuations may also affect the rate of alcohol metabolism, making women more susceptible to high BACs at certain times during her menstrual cycle.
  3. The metabolic rate cannot be influences by exercise, breathing deeply, eating, drinking coffee, or taking other drugs.
  4. Studies of pilots, drivers, and skiers all indicate that coordination and cognition are impaired in a person with a hangover, increasing the risk of injury.

Chapter 16

  1. A death caused by a residential fire occurs every 143 minutes.
  2. About 40% of all unintended firearm deaths occur among people age 5-29.
  3. Every year, about 120 Americans are unintentionally shot to death by children under 6.
  4. Although most people fear attack from strangers, the majority of victims are acquainted with their attacker.

Stress and Psychological Wellness

Sometimes we need to realize there are OTHER solutions to our problems.

There are times when you are faced with a problem and you feel like you are stuck and there is absolutely no other option or solution to the problem. This causes you to get stressed out which keeps you from seeing a solution to the problem. You might not see it right away, but usually there is always a solution to your problem. It might not be completely satisfying, but you can at least have some ease about the situation to help you become less stressed. When you're less stressed you can think more clearly. A way to try and find a solution is to talk to someone and let them know what is happening. Chances are they will see your situation in a different way than you do, helping you find the solution faster. But sometimes people are other-directed causing that person to maybe give the solution that someone else wants, but doesn't give themselves a solution because they are trying to satisfy the other person. For example, if you are having a bad day and your friend keeps asking you what's wrong, but you don't want them to know how you truly feel, you just tell them that you are tired so they leave you alone. It satisfies them, but you still aren't satisfied which causes you to become stressed. A way you can help yourself out in this situation is by trying meditation and visualization to help relax yourself. This can help cause a reaction where you are able to find a solution to your problem and become less stressed. For people that do meditation and visualization on a daily basis are usually seen as being inner-directed. They have their own values and a positive self-concept which leads to a high self-esteem. Overall, the moral of the story is to just stop, take a step back, assess the situation, and try your best to satisfy not only others, but more importantly yourself.

Carbohydrates


  • Average consumption of carbohydrates in a day: 174 grams (2,436 grams of carbs / 14 days = 174 grams of carbs).
  • Represents 696 calories from carbohydrates (174 x 4 = 696).
  • With an average of 1,255 calories a day, 55% of those calories are contributed by carbohydrates.
  • With the recommendation of 45%-65%, my intake is exactly in the middle of the scale.

Fat

  • Average consumption of fat in a day: 39 grams (543 grams of fat / 14 days = 39 grams of fat)
  • Represents 351 calories from fat (39 x 9 = 351).
  • With an average consumption of 1,255 calories and 39 grams of fat a day, my fat intake contributes to 28% of total energy.
  • With the recommendation of fat not contributing more than 20%-35% of total energy, I am above the minimum but also below the maximum.
  • Looking at the days I went over my recommended goal intake of fat, I noticed I ate Mary Calendar's Mac & Cheese or Totino's Pizza Rolls.
  • I recall being in a rush those days, so I didn't have a lot of time to actually make something better for me.
  • Next time I am in a rush and I choose to eat those meals again, I will eat a smaller portion so I don't go over my goal of fat intake and will in return lower my percentage.
  • Average consumption of cholesterol in a day: 101 milligrams

Protein

  • Average consumption of protein in a day: 46 grams (640 grams of protein / 14 days = 46 grams of protein). 
  • Represents 184 calories from protein (46 x 4 = 184).
  • With an average consumption of 1,255 calories and 46 grams of protein a day, my protein intake contributes to 4% of total energy.
  • With the recommendation of protein contributing 10%-35% of total energy, my comparison of 4% is below the recommendation.
Vitamins/Minerals

  • Vitamin C is a high consumption, while Iron, Vitamin A, and Calcium are a lower consumption 
  • There is a high sodium content in Cup O Noodles. The best way to enjoy that food without too much sodium would be to take out as much of the seasoning as possible.

Conclusion

For the most part I'm somewhat satisfied with the way I eat. It isn't completely unhealthy, but then again it isn't completely healthy. I would like to eat more fruits and vegetables. It's hard for me because with today's society, I'm always busy and on the run. A way I feel like I can get around that to improve my eating habits and take that step towards a healthier lifestyle would to be to pre-package some healthy fruit and vegetable snacks (on the weekend when I'm the least busy) for everyday for the entire week. That way I can just grab it and go and not have to buy something that's processed or fast food. One thing I am very proud of myself for choosing to do before this was to stop drinking soda completely. I remember in high school I used to drink at least 2 cans of Dr. Pepper every single day. When I graduated I took that step to stop and observed what happened because of that. The outcome of it was really good and looking at all of these charts of what I eat and drink and how it breaks everything down just confirms it even more.

Exercise Routine

Workout Plan

Warm Up (Before every workout)
First thing to do is warm up. Warm up for 5-10 minutes using an elliptical as a good piece of equipment to warm up your entire body. 

Strength Training
Focus on strength training for about 15-20 minutes. When performing exercises that target improving your strength, follow these key elements:
  1. Use movements that are controlled and slow.
  2. On exertion, you want to exhale.
  3. Use a full range of motion.
  4. Make sure you are not targeting the same muscle group for 2 consecutive days.
  5. You generally want to target for 2 sets of 12 reps (Ex: Do 12 leg extensions, take a 30 second break, and do another 12 leg extensions).

Seated Rows

Tricep Extensions

The last thing is to finish off the work out is just to stretch as a cool down for 5-10 minutes. Make sure to target every area of the body and focusing on the areas used that day for strength training.

Introduction

Hey guys!
              My name is Kimberly Hampshire, I'm 20 years old, soon to be 21 on March 14th, and I am majoring in Business Management at Palomar. I'm hoping to have my own photography business sometime in the future. It won't be any old photography business either because I want to focus on taking pictures for families with someone who has cancer. My mom had breast cancer and I had carcinoid cancer, so I understand the sadness and the tough times that come from dealing with cancer. With my photography business, families will be able to have happy memories to hold on to, rather than the sad memories of chemo therapy, radiation, being in the hospital, and being so sick. This is especially if that family member with cancer were to pass away. I would love to help bring joy and comfort to the family, and I think that is the best benefit to having this kind of photography business.
              Other than that, I love to play soccer, golf, and swim. I'm considered a crazy cat lady and I love penguins just as much.  I probably listen to some of the most diverse playlists of music. From Reggae to Rock, from Pop to Country, from Alternative to Hip Hop, and that's not even the tip of the iceberg. But if there's one thing you should know about me and my music is that I've always been a huge Maroon 5 fanatic. I've been to 3 Maroon 5 concerts and I met Adam Levine (yes, I cried like a baby). I'm a certified framer at Michael's Arts and Crafts. I graduated from Mission Hills High School in 2011 where I met my boyfriend, Alex, of 5 and a half years and counting. Since my mom is from Appleton, Wisconsin and I am named after the city Kimberly,Wisconsin, it is safe to say I am a huge Green Bay Packer fan. Plus I love cheese. That's pretty much it, but I love listening to what others have to say and talking so if you want to get to know me more, be ready with your ears on because I will probably talk them off.

Every year since 2007, my family participates in Relay for Life (a 24 hour cancer walk). It started out in honor of my mom for when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, but now we also walk in honor of myself for when I was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer in 2011.
